Il Magic Circle, considerata la società magica più famosa al mondo, ha confermato che Berglas è morto a Londra venerdì sera. Berglas, conosciuto come l'”Uomo Internazionale del Mistero”, è stato il primo mago a avere un proprio programma televisivo britannico, “Incontra David Berglas”, nel 1954.
Negli anni ’80 ha avuto una seconda serie televisiva chiamata “La Mente di David Berglas”, in cui ha intrattenuto celebrità, tra cui Omar Sharif, Christopher Lee e Britt Ekland. Nel corso dei decenni, è apparso spesso in TV e radio britanniche ed è diventato un nome familiare per le sue incredibili prodezze, tra cui la guida di un’auto a Londra bendato. Berglas era rinomato nelle cerchie magiche per un trucco chiamato “Effetto Berglas”, con cui poteva trovare la carta scelta da uno spettatore a qualsiasi numero in un mazzo di carte. David Berglas, one of the most influential magicians and mentalists of the 20th century, has died at the age of 97. The Magic Circle, considered the world’s most famous magical society, confirmed that Berglas passed away in London on Friday evening. Berglas, known as the “International Man of Mystery,” was the first magician to have his own British television program, “Meet David Berglas,” in 1954.
In the 1980s, he had a second television series called “The Mind of David Berglas,” where he entertained celebrities, including Omar Sharif, Christopher Lee, and Britt Ekland. Over the decades, he frequently appeared on British TV and radio, becoming a household name for his incredible feats, including driving a car in London blindfolded. Berglas was renowned in magical circles for a trick called the “Berglas Effect,” in which he could locate a spectator’s chosen card at any number in a deck of cards. It is considered the Holy Grail of magic effects, the secret of which he never revealed.
In 2018, Berglas was awarded the Order of the British Empire (MBE) by the Duke of Cambridge for his services to magic and psychology. Upon receiving the award, he stated, “I am delighted to accept this honor, but I am even happier that the art of magic has finally been recognized. I have spent over 60 years entertaining people in person, on the radio, and on television – ‘reading their minds’ – but certainly did not expect this.”
Berglas revitalized the Magic Circle society during his tenure as president from 1989 to 1998. It was under his leadership that the society decided to admit women into the world of illusionists in 1991. His son, Marvin Berglas, elected as president of the Magic Circle in September of this year, said, “My father was a giant in the world of magic, known for his originality, creativity, and spectacle. His magic not only amazed audiences but also his peers. However, to us, his family, he will always be remembered as a loving husband, father, and grandfather.”
The illusionist Derren Brown praised Berglas as “one of the greatest living magical performers” when Berglas received the Order of the British Empire (MBE).
“Generations of magicians and mentalists owe him a debt of gratitude,” said Brown. “Each of my shows is indebted to his art and his extraordinary body of work. I am grateful to him for his constant inspiration.”
