Dirk Arthur, who initially gained recognition as a specialty act in “Jubilee” in 1997 and went on to perform at various Las Vegas venues, died at his Las Vegas residence over the weekend. He was 63 years old, with his 64th birthday approaching on October 29.
Jay Owenhouse, a close friend and fellow magician, confirmed on Tuesday that a housemate of Arthur discovered him unresponsive in his bedroom on Sunday. Owenhouse believes that Arthur passed away the previous Friday.
Owenhouse is in the process of acquiring Arthur’s property, as he is preparing to launch a show (sans exotic animals) in a tent located across from Mandalay Bay on the Las Vegas Strip. (In January 2022, Owenhouse had attempted to stage a show with three Bengal tigers but withdrew his request due to opposition from Clark County officials).
In turn, Arthur had been planning to take over a theater in Branson, Missouri, with intentions to debut a new show featuring his famous 10 cats. He had also planned to reside at the theater.
Owenhouse was busy with landscaping work on the property during Friday and Saturday and last saw Arthur on Friday. He only realized something was amiss when he didn’t see or hear from Arthur on Sunday. Owenhouse stated on Tuesday that he will look after Arthur’s collection of exotic animals until they can be relocated to a reputable sanctuary. He is postponing the opening of his show to November 5 to ensure the welfare of the animals.
